SDL Atlas is the result of the merger of several renowned manufacturers and distributors of innovative and high-quality testing instruments and consumables. By combining the strengths and expertise of these resourceful companies, SDL Atlas has grown into the world's largest and most comprehensive source of textile testing, quality control and laboratory equipment.
Founded in 1919, Atlas was an early member of AATCC and actively worked with the organization and ASTM to commercialize testing instruments that met the standards used by U.S. retailers. In 1928, it introduced the AATCC Launder-Ometer® and in 1964, it took over production of the AATCC Crockmeter. The Textile Instruments Division was spun off from Atlas' Light Fastness Division to launch SDL Atlas in 2003.

History of innovative testing technologies
1928 – Launder-Ometer (AATC specified the Launder-Ometer as the only approved instrument for measuring color fastness to washing for over 50 years.)
1997 – QuickWash Plus (The Quickwash Plus system provides fabric shrinkage information within 12-15 minutes, compared to 8-12 hours for a standard washer and dryer.)
2001 – Snap Tester (SnapRite is a motorized device for determining the holding or breaking strength of snaps on clothing.)
2003 – MMT® (MMT is the only instrument on the market that can accurately measure the fluid wicking properties of performance and technical fabrics, ensuring the comfort and protection consumers demand.)
2012 – FTT® (The innovative FTT objectively and quantitatively measures the tactile properties of textiles.)
2016 – Vortex M6 (The Vortex M6 is a top-loading washer designed specifically for laboratory use and meets the requirements of AATCC Monograph M6.)
