Infrared radiation, like visible light and UV radiation, is made up of electromagnetic waves in a certain band. In terms of radiators, we specifically and physically inaccurately speak of short-wave and medium-wave radiation. Short-wave radiators operate with radiation intensity at lower wavelengths, closer to visible light. Compared to dark red-glowing medium-wave radiators, short-wave radiators glow much more intensely and brightly.
The source of radiation in these lamps is a hot tungsten filament, the same source that we know from the now banned ordinary light bulbs. This filament is held in the center of the tube by tantalum rings so that it does not touch the wall of the tube and does not overheat and subsequently break. The output of the lamps is up to 200W/cm of length, maximum length up to 6.4 m, filament temperature up to 2400°C, reaction time less than 1s.
Short-wave IR radiation has higher energy and, due to its high frequency, it penetrates more easily through the denser molecular structure of the heated materials. It is therefore suitable for heating materials deeply. On the other hand, it is not very suitable for heating transparent materials such as transparent foil and glass. Due to the high temperature of the filament, these radiators have higher cooling requirements, especially if they are equipped with a gold reflector.
