SEPAP MHE

The SEPAP MHE is designed to perform accelerated photoaging of polymers in order to understand the aging mechanisms of polymers exposed to the outdoor environment and to investigate chemical evolution at the molecular level. Using a mercury lamp, the SEPAP MHE is able to replicate and accelerate the chemical mechanisms responsible for the gradual loss of properties of polymers during their lifetime. The SEPAP MHE is able to operate at irradiance levels between 90 W/m² and 300 W/m² (290 - 420 nm).

Basic information

The SEPAP test facility was developed based on numerous studies of photoaging processes that affect polymeric materials by analyzing chemical changes at the molecular level when exposed to climatic stress and accelerated conditions. This allows predicting the lifespan of polymers and developing photostable formulations in a short time.

Designed as an analytical tool to understand the degradation mechanisms of naturally aging polymers at the molecular level, the SEPAP unit replicates the chemical changes under accelerated, controlled laboratory conditions that are achieved during long-term natural weathering conditions, where similar changes in macroscopic properties (mechanical, aesthetic, etc.) can be expected.

In order for the SEPAP methodology to work at its best, advanced analytical and chemical knowledge, experience and a database of materials are usually required.
